Picture this: the year is 2003. You’re at the middle school dance. In the background, pumping ever so lightly is Maroon 5’s “This Love” which was the smash hit of the time. You’re in the bathroom with your gals. We all have our Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse in hand. You already have one full layer of makeup on. Do you need a second layer?
Yes, you do, because you’re noticing that one pimple has come through. You take a giant scoop on your finger and tap it on. You paint a mountain of foam on your face to cover the zit. All around you, your friends are doing the same thing.
Or, consider: you look in the mirror on a Monday. You are sunburned from your weekend, having a great time in the state of Texas, tubing with all of your friends. You apply Maybelline Matte Mousse, basically stage makeup, essentially Ben Nye, so that the outside world will never know you’re burnt inside.
It was an early-aughts rite of passage, Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse, but it’s a mystery what attracted us to it in the first place.
A hypothesis: it was heavily advertised in J-14 magazine, Seventeen and/or Teen Vogue.
Actually, we bought the mousse because it was thick, because our low self-esteemed intuition told us we could plaster it all over our faces with abandon. It didn’t just cover up our skin; it covered up so much more.
