Mall Madness: It’s Time to Buy a Mall!
This week in mall journalism…

Landlords are practically giving away malls
Malls for everyone! Bloomberg reports that landlords have malls they want to unload. Could you be the lucky next owner of, say, Killeen Mall (crystal-clear visibility from Interstate 14!) or Maui’s Queen Ka’ahumanu Center (Cruise ships delivered 275,411 passengers to Maui in 2016!) My own search for malls for sale proved to be difficult, so maybe consider making these mall listings a little more AVAILABLE, property giants! If you do buy a mall, here are some helpful tips from Consumerist. Third tip? “Kick anyone who makes you look bad out.” It’s rough out there!
Inside a nearly abandoned Plano mall, this antique store is thriving
Is no one coming to your mall for new stuff? Sell old stuff! GuideLive reports on the Plano Antique Mall that’s thriving in a “nearly abandoned” Plano mall. It’s been open since 1995 and at a whopping 20,000-square-feet, has about 130 vendors selling antiques. My favorite part of the story is Cesar Castillo, the maintenance man who’s swept the floors and watered the plants of this now-very-empty mall for 25 years.
Mall news from down under! Perth’s 6PR talk radio station interviewed the four members of the Karrinyup Mall Walkers who are turning 90 this month. “I am a mall walker, and my birthday’s today,” Fred Marsh says. Fred talks about why they walk around malls, which as you might guess, is to stay fit. Around 70 people show up for the daily mall walks. “You walk from 8 o’clock to 9 o’clock before the shops open, and you have the benefit of walking around the mall,” he says. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s the middle of summer or the middle of winter, it’s still the same temperature.”
