She Just Moved In!
(On anonymous homes and the women who occupy them.)
Living in a place like New York City, you have to be mostly wealthy to afford apartment complexes with amenities like gyms, swimming pools, or automated Starbucks coffee machines. That’s why, whenever I come home, I soak up these features as much as I can. There’s always gentle house music pumping through outdoor speakers made to look like rocks. One version of heaven is laying in the sun on a chaise lounge chair, with Swedish house music playing through rocks to only you.
There are many shades of grays and beiges in new apartment complexes, from fixtures to wall color. I like how these colors are supposed to go with everything but don’t fully go with anything. These buildings are designed to feel social, with theater rooms and lobbies and outdoor grills, but they always feel sort of unused too. Everything feels mostly nice and mostly safe, and there’s something supremely comforting, if not a little disorienting, about knowing that you’re surrounded by newness.
It’s time to make a house a home…
