Fashion Corner: Cheap Mirrors!!
LOTS of beautiful mirrors out there lately…but they are for the upper-middle-class elite, it seems, those who have figured out how to monetize pastels and earthy neutrals. (NOT hating, just jealous is all!) Lately, I have been enjoying the simple pleasures of the bedroom mirror — the classic, skinny rectangle — from Walmart’s Mainstays. It is framed in gold, and it has brought me careful evaluation and pleasure every minute I’ve spent in front of it. It has actually made my face look better! The gold adds rococo, and it’s about $7 from head to toe.
This mirror is just attractive! It reminds me that I’m here in this bedroom, sitting at a desk, trying to sort things out. If I didn’t see this reflected to me, I don’t know if I’d be here at all. Bathroom mirrors are a different viewing experience, both utilitarian and frenetic. A bedroom mirror is more measured, something you can really sit in front of and hopefully not pick your skin. It’s a “Dear Diary” of the day — Shelli Segal dresses from antique stores for Katie’s wedding, weird sex stuff, gentle smile, tired smile, this mirror doesn’t think before it takes a photo. This Mainstays masterpiece is teaching me how to not always grin like a Price Is Right girl, though I do love to do that.
Searching “bedroom mirror seeing yourself” pulled up results of a debate between sleeping in front of a mirror versus not. A writer from the Philippine Daily Inquirer wrote about why it’s not good to have a mirror facing your bed. Her daughter “who lives in California” asked her to explain why. The writer quotes a feng shui specialist named Victor Cheung who says it’s bad for our astral bodies. “When we sleep, our soul (i.e. astral body) leaves the (physical) body,” Cheung explains. “When the soul sees its own reflection, it gets startled, hence the bad dreams and nightmares…When the soul returns to the body, it may mistake the image in the mirror from the real body, hence the saying ‘soul-stealing.’”
I won’t mess around with that! Bedroom mirrors, I think, are best on the back of the door — the classique locale — or positioned ever-so-slightly towards your desk so you can see yourself think. Anything lacquered and with curves sells now for about $123456. Custom mirrors are lovely but expensive. Bedroom reflection cannot be so exclusive! See below:
1. Mainstays Gold Rectangle Door Mirror — $7
The classic! You can also easily carry it anywhere…the living room, even! Or outside for a sexy unique garden party.
2. Mirror Jewelry Cabinet Armoire sold on Poshmark — $52
The more unhinged the photo, the better the find! The full-length mirror on this armoire with a red, glowing face next to it opens up to reveal many compartments. “108 slots and 36 holes for earrings, 36 hooks for necklaces, 39 places for rings, 1 bar for bracelets, and 4 shelves” to be exact.
3. “Big long beautiful pink mirror from Forever21” sold on Mercari — $59
Once again…the more unhinged the photo, the better the find!
4. Interiors by Design Assorted Full-Length Mirrors from Family Dollar — $64 (but really $8)
Ok, so this is odd because they only come in cases of 8. But 8 mirrors for $64 is a really good deal and maybe you can do something strange with them? Or maybe your local Family Dollar will let you divvy them up, fingers crossed.
5. White Full-Body Mirror sold on Poshmark — $40
This one comes with an easel and looks very solid ~ like it belongs in your friend’s bedroom in a comfortably middle-class home!
6. Oval Cheval Mirror in Honey from Living Kit — $25
This mirror is very 90s-mom-rooster-in-the-kitchen! Goes with the cracked Dave Matthews CD I just bought from a sidewalk sale…
7. Leopard Over The Door Jewelry Mirror sold on OfferUp — $30
Another secret jewelry compartment mirror for those who can get to Staten Island!
8. Gardner Glass Products Beveled Full-Length Mirror from Lowe’s— $48
I would strongly suggest getting something like this frameless mirror, kissing it with lipstick and calling it a day!
